Filing an Extension

For clients who submit their tax data in the month of March, we will run an estimate and file an extension for their tax return. This will give us enough time to complete it without the client receiving any late penalties or interest. Due to the large number of client returns we prepare each year, we're unable to run an estimate and file an extension for any tax returns submitted to us after April 1st.

However, we can still accept your tax return data and prepare your return, even if it's submitted after our April 1st deadline. In this instance, we recommend running your own estimate and filing a request for extension to the IRS before the April 15th deadline. This will minimize or eliminate the amount in penalties and interest you'll be charged by the IRS.

Please note that all taxes owed to the IRS are required to be paid before April 15th, regardless of extension status. Receiving an extension on your tax return, simply gives you more time to file your tax return. Owing the IRS taxes after April 15th, even with an extension on your return, will result in late penalties and interest.

If you are unsure how much you owe in taxes, we recommend paying at least what you owed in taxes last year. You can find steps to file an extension and the forms needed to file for extension on the IRS's website here.
